Helsinki is the capital of Finland, located on the southern coast of the country, on the Gulf of Finland which is part of the Baltic Sea. The city is surrounded by a scattering of beautiful islands just off the coast which are popular tourist destinations for holiday makers who island- hop or take in the scenery on a cruise. Helsinki is also home to some beautiful churches and museums.

Quite a picturesque city, Helsinki was founded in 1550 by King Gustav Vasa of Sweden. It quickly became a competing trading post to Tallinn, the capital of neighbouring country Estonia.

In 1809 it was occupied by Russia and many buildings still standing today were developed, giving the city a strong presence of Russian architectural styles. Many movies set in St Petersberg are shot in Helsinki for this reason.

Helsinki is one of Europe's most Northern capitals, so a large portion of the year is shrouded by cold winters. From October until May, the city remains dark with average temperatures of -5 degrees Celcius and light snowfalls. Although brief, the summer in Helsinki is beautiful with mid 20 degree temperatures and lush green parks and trees all over the city.

Finnish people are friendly and will welcome you with open arms to their capital. You will find it easy to get around as the majority of Finnish people also speak English and are willing to help you. It is not unusual to meet people who speak three or four languages either!
